Options for Distance Vision

LASIK

During LASIK, a thin layer of tissue is folded back from the surface of the cornea. After the laser reshapes the cornea, the tissue is folded back into place, where it bonds quickly. At our eye clinic, we use a state-of-the-art, VISX S4 eye-tracking laser flying spot laser that produces an exceptionally smooth treatment. This three-minute procedure requires no needles and no stitches.LASIK can be used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Healing for most patients is so fast that vision can improve within hours of the procedure, and many patients return to work the next day.Considered fast, easy, safe, and effective, laser eye surgery is gaining popularity by the minute. Millions of people in the U.S. alone are enjoying the benefits of excellent vision with a decreased need for corrective eyewear. Laser eye surgery is the most sought after, and is also considered one of the safest elective medical procedures when completed in a dedicated and experienced facility.

We offer several types of laser vision correction so that every patient can obtain personalized, optimal results. Our laser eye surgeons are leaders in the field, integrating extensive experience and unmatched expertise to produce outstanding results.

Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, is the most popular form of laser eye surgery. During LASIK surgery, we first numb the eye with drops; and the laser eye surgeon then uses a special instrument called a microkeratome to create a thin flap in the corneal tissue. The flap is then folded back, and the laser reshapes the underlying tissue. Once the curvature has been corrected, the flap is repositioned and heals without stitches. Vision improves immediately; patients are generally fully comfortable and seeing well within one day.

Although an estimated 95 percent of patients can undergo LASIK laser eye surgery, approximately 3 percent won't benefit from this procedure. For these patients, PRK may be a better alternative.

PRK

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is the original laser vision correction procedure. This procedures is similar to LASIK, except that a tissue flap is not created. The laser treatment is done on the surface of the eye after removing the outer layer of cells. PRK is suitable for people whose corneas are too thin or too curved to be good candidates for standard LASIK. With PRK healing time is slightly longer than with LASIK,

and good vision is achieved in four to seven days.

In general, the conditions we're able to treat include nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. We like our patients to be at least 18 years of age, have healthy corneas, and to have had stable vision over the past year.

Comparison of Benefits: LASIK vs. PRK

The major differences between LASIK and PRK include:

LASIK laser eye surgery can treat a wider range of corrections. LASIK allows for rapid visual recovery, while PRK generally does not provide immediate visual clarity. LASIK laser eye surgery requires fewer post-operative follow-ups than PRK. PRK patients usually experience discomfort for a few days after the procedure, while LASIK laser eye surgery patients experience minimal pain, if any. PRK can treat patients who have certain corneal surface problems that might be aggravated by LASIK, and PRK can, at times, treat smaller eyes or thinner corneas more effectively.
Both procedures provide excellent results.
