Lip Enhancement

WHO IS A CANDIDATE?

If you desire to have fuller or more defined lips.
  • Males and females are both candidates for this procedure.

INTENDED RESULT

  • The intention is to give you the fuller lips you desire.
  • For some patients with very thin lips, the goal may be to have a more normal appearance.
  • For other patients, very thick and sexy lips are the goal.
  • Some patients desire a defined edge to the lip or a return to their less aged lip.

PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION

  • In this procedure, fat is harvested through mini-liposuction, then re-injected into the lips on a routine basis. Alternatively, a large quantity of fat can be injected in a single sitting. In addition to the implantation of some fat cells, new collagen and fibroblasts are stimulated. Over the year, about 40% will become permanent.
  • Alloderm is donor tissue with all of the viable cells removed. Using local anesthesia, it can be placed into both the body of the lip to create more volume and into the vermilion to add definition. Occasionally, it may be combined with Softform. The implant is very soft, and is relatively long lasting. Studies show that your own cells will grow into the implant to give it permanence. After several years, however, some of the product may be absorbed.
  • Softform is an updated version of Gortex. A hollow tube of Gortex is inserted into the lips under local anesthesia. This will enhance the vermilion border, but does not provide large volume correction. The results are permanent as long as the implant is in place. On rare occasion, the ends of the implant can come out, requiring a "touch-up" procedure.
  • This is the traditional Collagen patients have been using. Because the collagen is derived from animal sources, a patient must have a skin test to determine if they are allergic. Collagen can be injected into the edges of the lips to crisp the line, into the body of the lip to increase the red lip, or both. The collagen will need to be re-injected every few months.
  • Dermalogen is the newest product on the market for lip enhancement. Donor skin is used to make a high concentration collagen that can be injected into the lips. Preliminary studies indicate that it is non-allergenic and may last longer than bovine collagen.

  • Restylene is made of hyaluronic acid, another ground substance in the skin. The acid is cross-linked so that when it is placed into the skin it will have a longer lasting result. While Restylene will last longer than bovine collagen, some patients have reported intermittent lip swelling while the Restylene is in place. It is not currently FDA approved.
  • Isolagen is derived from a small piece of skin taken from behind the ear or on the buttock. The cells and collagen are grown in a lab, and the material is reinjected. In some studies, this material does not provide as much of a correction as the other available collagens. The advantage is that you are utilizing your own cells, and some physicians feel that the fibroblasts that are re-injected may continue to provide increased rejuvenation.
  • Artecolle is a mixture of bovine collagen and inactive tiny beads. When the material is injected, the collagen eventually degrades and leaves the beads behind to form a permanent augmentation. Safety studies are currently being conducted. Artecolle is currently not FDA approved.
  • These procedures can be done with either local anesthesia or local plus intravenous sedation. During your consultation, the doctor will discuss which of these choices will be best for you.

RECUPERATION AND HEALING

  • Postoperative pain is usually minimal. The most common postoperative issue is swelling. This is highly variable and it depends on the technique, how much your lip has been enlarged, and on individual healing characteristics. Swelling could last as long as two weeks.

OTHER OPTIONS

  • Lip enhancement can be done either alone or in conjunction with most other cosmetic procedures.
